DIGNITY OF WOMAN AT STAKE

Woman on one hand are said to be worshiped in our nation and on the other hand contemporary advertisement world has not left a single stone unturned to depict women as a commodity for sale. Leaving behind, all the ethics and moral. The dignity of women is at stake. There are several advertisements telecasted which represent things in erroneous approach.

Beauty has become a synonym for successful women. Several cosmetic products depict this idea through their advertisements. Fair complexion is being portrayed as a necessary qualification for success in professional and personal life. Where as these things have no meaning and logic. Still it generates inferiority complex among young girls who are not physically presentable or fair.

The other advertisement which has ruined the dignity of women is of ‘deodorants for men’. The emotions of women are set for sale. A woman is not so weak in her emotions that it can be driven away by mere the fragrance of a deodorant. One of the electronic media channel gave news that such obscene advertisement would be banned from 1st June 2011. However it is still being telecasted and woman is portrayed as a figure which can be seduced by mere exotic aroma.

It is strange that how concerned authorities allow these kinds of advertisements to be telecasted where moral obligations have no place.
Respect of women is the basis of respect of family in our society and this is what we are taught. Placing her dignity for sale is mean and unkind. Woman has great power to keep her feelings under veil. Her purity should not be set for sale.

Is Media in India really Free ?

Yet again I have experienced that Media in India is not free. A few days back a correspondent from BBC Lucknow visited my department i.e. Centre of Media Studies, IPS, University of Allahabad.

I was called by my Course Coordinator Mr. Chopra and was informed that this gentleman was here to conduct a discussion on “Giving Telecast Rights to an organization of Kumbh Mela 2013…?”. I got an opportunity to be part of the discussion.
The discussion panel consisted of Course Coordinator of our department, one senior faculty member and I was one of the three students chosen for the same. The exciting part was that the discussion was supposed to be broadcasted on BBC Hindi radio service.
However we made a circle and mike would be rotated by Mr. Correspondent. We started by giving our introduction followed by a questionnaire which was first of all answered by Mr. Chopra, who explained how technology has became so common and to give the rights to one organization would not be accepted by all. Then the mike reached Mr. Yadav, our faculty member, and he explained how the previousmelas were economically backward but for this mela Central government has provided crores of money so no such measure is required.

It was the student’s turn now and my classmate explained how this mela is for all and allotting rights to one organization is not at all precise. Next was one of my pass out senior who rejected the question and started explaining the importance of the mela.

Finally the mike was towards me and I was the last one to speak. I was wondering what to say as lot was spoken about the glory of the fiesta. So I took a different road, and said that the Mela as an event is no less than the Olympics. While answering the question on giving telecast rights I stated that its not a marriage ceremony of a celebrity or star that such a measure should be employed. Moreover I said, When we have scandals like Coal Gate and crores of money is allotted by government pools into corruption. Then even if the telecast rights are given it will open more avenues for corruption.

After my statement Mr. Correspondent again switched to Mr. Chopra and inquired whether this measure would be accepted by Sadhus and Mr. Chopra straightaway said “No”.
And here the discussion came to an end with sign-off by Mr. Correspondent.
Mr. Correspondent complimented us for having good recording.
After he left the department. I was complimented by my C.C for speaking good points.

It was in the evening and I switched to portal of BBC Hindi, somewhere exited to hear my voice on air and that too on the BBC.
But to my surprise my outlook was completely removed along with my introduction. This incidence banged the question in my mind…”Is media in India free?”
My voice spoke on corruption and I projected the scene from different angle, and the correspondents like these removed the entire portion of discussion, how can we say that Media is free….
However, After this episode I was not at all sad as one thing was eminent that – “I spoke so well that my voice was suppressed” and it shows that “Our Media is not free.” !

Review of ‘Yeh Jo Hai Pakistan’ – book by Shivendra Kumar Singh…!

In this book ‘Yeh Jo Hai Pakistan’ writer  Shivendra Kumar Singh has written his memories about his tours to Pakistan while covering Indian Cricket Team. He is one of the most famous sports journalist in India. He started his career from his hometown Allahabad with print media and then shifted to the media hub Delhi and worked for zee news, star news and now he is a special correspondent with ABP news.

In this book the title simply reflects that this book is related to the favorite debate topic of Indians i.e. Indo-Pak. But it is new as it is in cricket prospects and well as the ambiance of our neighbor country. It is a reflection of his visit to Pakistan with the Indian Cricket Team in captainship of legendary Saurav Ganguly . It was in the year 2004 when the Indian cricket team was in Pakistan after a break of 14 years. It was a wonderful experience not only for master blaster who started his career with Karachi- which is known as Bombay of Pak.

The writer expresses how he tried to chat with Tendulkar but stopped by the security. Since it was an Indian team security was very tight. While reading this book I must articulate that this is a very interesting book and we all know Indo-Pak is the favorite topic of every Indian right from the childhood. The tittle and initial pinch of the book is the panorama of his views and definitely attracts readers.

Sachin Tendulkar-Master Blaster was the only player in the team to have played in Pakistan before 2004.As we know the team went there after a long break. It was at this stadium in Karachi that Sachin also began his career. So like every player it was a good flashback for Tendulkar. Then came March 13, the first One Day against Pakistan. The National stadium was jam packed. The last over remained and Pakistan needed nine runs to win. Sourav handed over the ball to Ashish Nehra. India won that breathtaking match.

The flow of the book is very interesting. The day after the match, former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas invited journalists  for a dinner at his place. The writer expresses how on their way back, they  wanted to see the Karachi beach. Their taxi driver took them  to the beach. Until then he  does not remember visiting a beach before even in India. In no time he has shown his journalistic mind and he called his cameraman, they  took some shots and bytes from the perspective of cricket, security measures and the fast reaching waves of modernization in Karachi, and above all with an outlook of increasing the popularity of Indian cricket stars in Pakistan. The Indian team visited after 14 years and that too only stayed for a few hours in Karachi. That left people only wanting more as they could not even catch a glance of their favorite stars. Their story was ready. They wanted to experiment. He concluded the PtC with a poetry: “Umre daraz maang kar laaye thay char din - do aarzoo mein kat gaye do intezar mein”. At this point I must express that Writer singh’s PTC are very interesting and nice to hear. He still remembers that he  did not have much luggage while going to Pakistan, as the trip drew to a close and he landed at Delhi airport and was full of baggage- Partly due to his shopping and the fairly large number of gifts that he received from the people in Pakistan. The love and emotions behind the gifts outweighed his urge to refuse them. It would have been impolite too. The acts of gifting started in Karachi only when a friend’s Abba gave him a shawl and a trinket box saying “Son keep this as a souvenir from us, we will always be in your memories.” The box still occupies a place in his home and has been passed on to the next generation - his wife would keep her jewelry in it and now his daughter keeps her anklet their.

Writer Singh visited again in 2005 and 2006 and included these two experiences too in this book.  In 2005, the most beautiful memory he recalls is meeting the great cricketer Hanif Mohammad. When they  reached, the door was closed. Writer pressed the doorbell and Hanif Mohammad came out. They  introduced themselves, apologized for visiting uninformed and earnestly requested for an interview. The writer writes meeting Hanif  was like turning the leaves of Pakistan’s cricket history .  One would be amazed to know that of the first 100 Test matches played by Pakistan, there was not even one in which a member of Hanif Saheb’s family was not a part. The writer started the interview. Instead of putting forth questions to him, he humbly requested him to share anecdotes from his life. Hanif saheb shared how in his childhood days his ammi and abba would dress him like a girl: he would wear a frock and bangles too! I was an attentive listener while he recalled. This experience definitely connects readers as most of us have experienced an identical thing in our lives.

In 2006 when writer again visited Pakistan, he had a chance to visit Karachi third time. Even though the Indian team had lost the test match in Karachi, Irfan Pathan marvelled at taking a hat trick in the first over of the match. Later, the ties between India Pakistan turned unpleasant. The writer  has a great memory of playing a match against Karachi journalists, they  tried their  hands at cricket and the venue they chose was Mohamad Ali Shah Stadium. They played at the ground though writer injured his finger trying to take a catch for which his colleagues still have a great laugh together about it.
The writer has expressed how Karachi’s food was good, a bit spicy and oily. But, once he was familiarized with the city he got the food of his choice. He still have a strong desire to visit Pakistan with his family. To meet all those who gave him so much love that if he have to speak on Pakistan and its people He says he would need days to finish. Good or bad, He remembers every moment spent in Pakistan. As a journalist, the stories that he did he remember the backdrop of each piece. He recalls the streets and road.  He remembers Pakistan.

Not only all this, the book have some interesting chapters featuring instances of the greatest cricketers of both countries like Inzamam-UL-Haq, Shoib Akhtar, Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, Dhoni etc.

I am sure since the writer has experienced all this in front of himself, his eyes must be in tears while writing at the end about SriLankan Team tour in 2009 and controversy related to it. It was certainly a black day as a writer puts it.  And on the other hand with the hope to write his next book when Indian team visits Pakistan again.

Certainly this book is a must read book. Very Interesting, good flow, excellent language and the novel bond which we discover between Indo-Pak after reading this book is superb.

Two silent revolution are sweeping India……..one is Media !

‘Allahabad has been the center of gravity for the debates how India should be, right from the freedom struggle of the country.

Defense is how the country should be. The people of this country including civil society and politicians are the stakeholders in the country’s security. We should take a look on holistic prospective.

I have great faith in the country but we should look into the challenges. Manufacturing output of India is declining from 1750 to 2012. 25% GDP currently is equivalent to twenty families in India.

Tagore was cynical on nationalism but later he became author of two national anthems. Firstly we should have peace then we can have security. Likewise when we will have peace we will havedevelopment.

Social economic inequalities with political aspirations is the reason for problems like Kashmir. Till 1930, world population would be more than eight billion in that water scarcity would be acute.

Two silent revolution is sweeping India, one is rising in technology of Media. In Delhi three million people live in slums in that 95% have technology but only 5% have toilets.

Democrasy is a positive point for us. A society which doesn’t have law and governance will become a jungle. We should consider strategical boundaries not the territorial.’

Above lines were said by Rtd. Air Marshal Kapil Kak, in the inaugural lecture of the two day national seminar on ‘Rising India’s National Security Strategy : Perespectives and Prospects’organized by Defense and Strategic Affairs Department, University of Allahabad at the guest house auditorium of the University of Allahabad.

The seminar started with the welcoming note by Prof. R.K Upadhyaya, HOD,  defense and strategic affairs department, University of Allahabad. Dr. Sanjeev Bahadoria introduced the seminar and its prospects. The inaugural lecture was presided by Prof N.R Farooqi, Dean Research, University of Allahabad.

Prof. Farooqi explained the overall prospective of our security right from the mughul period and the future prospective. The two day seminar had wonderful lectures by brilliant defense experts like Prof. Shrikant Paranjpe, Pune University who spoke on political communication including the textbooks which are written according to the political supervision, Prof. R.P. Yadav, Gorukhpur University who choose Indo-China relations with overall prospects and Prof. R.N Swarup, Madras University who spoke on strategic affairs of the country.

At the end of the inaugural function Dr. Sanjeev Bahadoria mentioned the name behind the show i.e. Dr. Prashant Agrawal, who single handily organized the seminar. Many questions and outlook were presented by the audience. The seminar was attended by many students and researchers of the defense department and Centre of Media Studies with many teachers of the University of Allahabad which include Prof. M.N. Verma, Dr. Prashant Agrawal, Dhananjai Chopra, Prof. Sekhar Adhikari, Prof. R.K Tandon, Prof. R.N Swarup, Dr. Sanjeev Bahadoria, Prof. R.K. Upadhyaya, Amit Maurya.

The two day seminar was a pioneer in the field of defense and discussing the strategic affairs on internal as well as external security. Best experts from all over India were under one roof to discuss national security.

Why we celebrate Independence Day ?

It is an occasion to cherish, how we are transforming the independence we got after a long struggle into the development of the people. If we analyze through this phenomenon the condition is not excellent. Last year a movement was started during independence day and this year a movement against black money has just ended .

In spite of more than six decades of independence a Chief Minister of a state can send a professor and farmers to jail who raise questions,  a home minister of a state vanishes, frightening of his arrest, and a Chief Minister who has corruption charges, is able to remove an honest Chief Minister from its chair.

In an era when an Indian lady has reached the space station the very second time, girls in the country are commanded by panchayati rules not to wear jeans and keep mobiles.

The population which is below the poverty line is equivalent to the number of population which we had at the time of independence.

Certainly we also have a number of things to be proud of and cherish including many achievements.
In spite of thousands of criticism, India is the world's largest democracy. The people of this country have the power to throw corrupt leaders out of power.

Our economy is still breathing because of its structure, in spite of the worst time in America-Europe. We have successfully got rid of Polio. The best performance in history of Olympics shows us beautiful future and hope.

With all of this social media which have emerged as the best tool to tailor the system which is being used by Judge of Madurai, an NGO which is bringing out engineers in Buster- a moist area and wives who left home because of no toilets in Uttar Pradesh along with many other examples.

May Be !

These examples could have worked as a laundry to tailor our system which is suffering from cancer.

Jai Ho India !

Jai Hind !

Jai Bharat !

Happy Independence Day !

President Pranab Mukherjee-‘Not the best PM which India never had but the best President that India would have’ !

The trepidation is finished. UPA did not only announced their candidate but decided the 13th President of India. Pranab Mukherjee looks certain to become the President. After more than 4 decades of political career . This would be his last station. Some days ago, when I wrote in one of mypiece that ‘Why APJ Abdul Kalam should not become the next President’ I received many comments, some on twitter in fact termed me as I am joking and totally un-precise. But the fact of my outlook was why to repeat a President? The UPA coalition lacks the votes to ensure victory, but Mulayam Singh Yadav of the SP and Mayawati of the BSP have both offered to back him. The country is happy that they have ensured their support. This will give Mukherjee victory even if Mamata Banerjee splits from the UPA coalition. Like many political pundits I believe she is wrong not only on Bengali factor but if we see Mr. Mukherjee, he is definitely accepted by everyone. Many term him as Bhisma-Pita-Maa of Indian Politics which is precise.

Nevertheless the political entwine and turns preceding week were so tortuous that they miserably uncovered the flaws of the UPA and certainly damaged its integrity. Thanks to our dear TV News Channels which throughout telecast live coverage from outside houses of important players in this drama and with live discussions from their studios with political commentators and experts.   Someone thinking that a presidential victory will make the UPA stronger or improved positioned to pursue sturdy policies looks a fruitless optimist.Neither it will bring their credibility that has gone from last week’s drama. Last week’s plotting make it cynical whether the government will last its full term till May 2014. Other parties will perhaps force an early election in 2013. The 'tamasha' which saw last week was understood as an initial plot for that factor. When on Thursday, Mulayam and Mamata joined hands to reject Mukherjee as a presidential candidate, and instead suggested three other candidates.Thier press conference at Mulayam bungalow was seen as a slap on Mrs. Gandhi’s face. But folks, you cannot underestimate a member from the Nehru-Gandhi Pariwar who has led this country from very beginning. This seemed to change all political equations. But the marriage of convenience lasted just one day. As expected Mulayam switched sides and formally backed the Congress candidate, Mukherjee. Well in spite of any reason (CBI cases against Mulayam) as political pundits suggests there is not even a person who can articulate that Pranab is not a good choice for President.

The authentic lesson of the episode(one of the most interesting which I have even seen in my life) was not that Mulayam was one with the Congress, but that he would gully or prop up as he contentedly, without regret. He would love to become Prime Minister, but time is running out for him since he is already 73 years old. If this is not the truth he would have never left the Chief Minister post of UP for his son. His top and maybe only chance will come after the next general election. As many polls have suggested that the air is of Mulayam and he may get even three times more he got in the last general elections. Therefore he may lead the third front. This could well see both the Congress and BJP is losing ground, opening the way for a national coalition government led by regional parties. Which would have not only the partners of UPA and NDA but also parties which are not supporting the two alliances. If the SP can photocopy its assembly avalanche in a general election, it could win 60 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh, making it by far the biggest regional party in Parliament. That would be an outstanding launching pad for Mulayam to bid for prime ministership. And this phenomenon seems true very soon as we can expect general elections early next year. Bear in mind, instantaneously after the March state election in Uttar Pradesh, when the SP won 224 seats against the Congress tally of just 28, there was chat of Mulayam trying to vigor an immediate general election to take advantage-in of the electorate’s anti-Congress disposition in the minds of the populace. A senior political pundit articulated that Mulayam Yadav and Mamata Banerjee had a general interest in an early parliamentary election: both could ride the thrust that had taken them to colossal victories in their respective state elections. If they waited till the general election fell due in 2014, that thrust would be lost, and may by then be replaced by anti-incumbency sentiment, to their grave difficulty. Why not strike while the iron was hot?Why not to have another point when you are advantage-in, in a tie break of a tennis match? Yes folks this is definitely a tie-break situation as it is now or never for Mulayam. Yet, the SP speedily ruled out an immediate general election. Ramgopal Yadav who not only announced support for Pranab also ruled out from early general elections. Its cadres and coffers were both exhausted after a long election campaign in UP, and the party needed time to restructure its energies and cash deposits. Till then, it was willing to support the UPA as and when the cost-deposits ratio looked good. The Congress flatter Mulayam obstinate, and as a gesticulation allowed Dimple Yadav, Mulayam’s daughter-in-law, to win the Kannauj byelection uncontested. The last time she was defeated from Congress candidate only. This temporarily brought the two nearer. But it will not douse Mulayam’s prime ministerial ambitions for long. Every politician's desire to become PM whether is Mulayam or Modi or Mr. Gandhi Or Advani or Nitish etc. Moreover, Mayawati’s BSP has become a marginal partner in the Congress coalition government in Uttarakhand. Yet, the BSP there has just three seats and one minister. This is too slim a basis for a sturdy squashed. The Congress and BSP are rivals in wooing the Dalit and Muslim vote, and so are not natural allies. The Congress will happily do deals with both the SP and BSP, but sees the SP as a better match. What about Mamata’s aspirations? Since 2009, her 20 Lok Sabha seats have been crucial for giving the UPA a hairline majority in the Lok Sabha. This has facilitated the lady to blackmail the government at will. She scotched the Teesta water agreement with Bangladesh, forced the government to back down on foreign direct investment in multibrand retail, forced the government to change the railway minister and railway budget, and stalled land acquisition legislation. This is bizarre Congress should definitely search for her replacement as she has time and tide she has given the message that she has the power to stop anything in spite of only hairline support. The tamasha to remove Dinesh Trivedi was a bizarre instance indeed in Indian polity. Her truculence suggests she is ready to split away. She may think she will gain by distancing herself from the Congress and its corruption-tainted image. She believes that in a fresh election, without Congress support, she will raise her Lok Sabha tally from 20 to 30 or more. By the end of this year, both Mamata and Mulayam may decide the time is ripened to ditch Congress and force a general election. Preceding week, marriage against Congress on the presidential issue, but only for 24 hours. Now Mamta is trying again to gain support for Kalam through Facebook. Let see when would Mamta and Mulayam will unfriend Congress for their desires. Lastly, I believe next time, they may join hands long enough to tumble the government and force an election.

Times change, people change. In current times, the post of President is vital so a man like Pranab Muherjee is the best person. Mr. Mukherjee has been singularly lucky in his long political career. The most famous sentence of Pranab is that ‘ he is the best PM which India never had’ but now we hope that would be replaced by ‘The best President which India had’ !
